Module 4: Celebrating Diversity
4.01: First ImpressionsWhat we think may be correct may not always be and that is what this lesson is all about. You are going to look through 10 scenes and write down what your first impressions are of each. There is no correct answer here so just write down what you think. This class is about exploration and learning so take the time and analyze the situations. After you will read about them again from a different perspective. Let's see if your first impression changes or not. :) The work file will help you organize your thoughts and help you complete the assessment.

4.02: StereotypesOnce you have looked at other cultures and seen how you may think of others at first glance we are given the opportunity from the other side. Have you often wondered what other cultures/countries may think of Americans? Within this lesson there are a couple of great sites that provide us with that insight. Many of the stereotypes others have of Americans are quite funny, I hope you enjoy reading through them. We are going to learn more about what a stereotype is in this lesson and how to celebrate diversity. There are several key diversity terms you will want to take note of. I suggest using them in a sentence, talk about them to your parents and friends and see how they understand them. This will help clarify their meaning. Also start to think about stereotypes you may have encountered, what role the media plays and how to address this issue.
Here are some flashcards to help you with the terms in the lesson: http://quizlet.com/_4m302 Good luck!

4.03: Closer LookAh, example time! Now that we know what constitutes a stereotype we are going to look for them in our everyday lives. Specifically through the media, I want you to find 5 examples. It may be commercials on TV, movies, radio, or magazines, billboards even. You may hear stereotypes in songs or see them portrayed in your nighttime tv shows. I have seen several examples from movies such as "Legally Blonde" and tv shows such as "I Carly", even cartoons sometimes. You will want to take a look at your work file ahead of time so you know what to look for. Find 5 unique examples from different sources-explain just how the stereotype is perpetrated. After you find your examples there are a few questions to answer. Be thorough in your response, I need to see that you understand for full credit. The work file is what you will be submitting.

4.04: Understanding CultureWhat is culture and why does it matter? Some say that we have no culture in the US but that is not true. We are made up of individuals that each bring unique pieces to our culture. Culture is not an easy concept to define but we can start to think about what makes up culture and identify in those terms. Watch the videos in the lesson and take notes. The site about understanding culture is very informative as well-explaining concepts such as universals that will be in our next lesson. There is an interactive word game that is very helpful with pinning down vocabulary that we associate with culture as well. Enjoy!

4.05 Cultural UniversalsThere are so many ways in which we are different but if we take the time we can usually group them into categories. This lesson is all about those categorizations! There are three types of cultural universals: Social, Economic, and Political. Read through the lesson to see some examples of each. We may all do these differently but we each have a system for socializing with others, getting goods and services and following rules. In one culture you may shake hands when greeting others, another you may kiss the cheek or pat one on the back. Same activity is involved (greeting another) just a different way of addressing it. At the bottom of the Assessment tab there is a link to find out "How is Culture Transmitted". This link will take you to the page that also provides information on the assessment you will need to complete. You have 3 options here.
A. Once upon a time: understanding universals within Cinderella stories from different cultures. B. You choose: Linking up your own universals with those from a favorite song or a magazine article. C. Common threads: Target a tradition within your own family, visually depict it and then write about it and explain. Video Tutorial: http://tiny.cc/405tutorial

4.06 Take ActionHave you ever met someone from another culture? Living in the US you probably have but have you taken the time to get to know their culture? What have you learned about how others live? What kinds of things make up culture that might be worth exploring? These are all ways we can immerse ourselves into another culture. Try a new and unique food. (Not Tacos or Fettuccine) Interview another about where they are from and the differences they see between here and there. (If it is all the same, it is not what I am looking for!) Visit a cultural event (Oktoberfest is right around the corner) or even a class.
There are many ways to explore another culture. Be sure to cite any sources that you refer to in your assessment. A presentation is appropriate here-something unique and worthy of your talent! I look forward to seeing something fun and exciting. Pictures always help to solidify how much you have learned about another culture. On a side note, the video abut ethnic man is pretty cool. I have had several students who tell me they feel like they can identify. If you feel as though this lesson may take a few extra minutes or you need help identifying a way you can complete it or put together your assessment please get in touch with me so that we can talk it over and find a fun way for you to complete it.

4.07 Module AssessmentWow! You have probably learned a lot about stereotypes and cultures by this time, right? For our module assessment be sure to review all your terms and understand each so you can give a definition in your own words. We will review examples and talk about what you found as well.
Take the time to call, email, or setup an appointment. We will chat about this module, review your work and go over any questions you might have about this module or the ones you are continuing onto. Thank you! Mrs. Sage Global Studies 239-443-5331 office http://tiny.cc/sageappt |
