Module 5: Global Security
5.01: Power and PoliticsWe are going to learn about some different types of government. Four very different ones are presented at the beginning of the lesson. After finishing up Module 4 you start to see how cultures may view government differently and so this accounts for the variety and types we read about here. Understand what a Democracy, Theocracy, Monarchy, and Dictatorship are. There are several other key terms presented in the lesson that support this lesson so take notes and enjoy the matching game at the end.

5.02: Planning a GovernmentThis lesson can be a bit heavy especially if you are not much into writing but it is a fun lesson and lets you be very creative. You are going to pretend you are on a deserted island, vis a vis "Survivor". You have been asked to participate in planning the government with others that are stranded. There are 6 "episodes" presented in the lesson along with 15 reference terms. It is important that you use each reference term. It can seem intimidating but make it fun, answer each question within the episodes and you will start to see your reference terms dwindle away. I have had students use their family members as the other castaways, friends or even teachers. I have had students follow the norm and make friends but several chose not to and became the pirates. Enjoy putting together a story that showcases just how much work is involved in planning a government. Think about how day to day our government goes through each of these decisions with many different viewpoints trying to agree. I think you will see that although we have our differences we work pretty good together here in the US.

5.03: National IdentitiesNow that we know more about government types and how to plan one we are going to learn about nationalism and patriotism. Nationalism often gets a bad rap because we often associate it with Hitler's actions during WWII. Although a horrific turn of events he was exhibiting extreme nationalism. Most people can express nationalism, a love of ones culture or people, without hurting others. Patriotism, the love of ones country or land is something we are all familiar with especially when we celebrate 4th of July or even Veterans and Memorial Day. There are several quotes about patriotism in the lesson. Read through them carefully and pick your favorite. This will be something that is asked in your assessment. Think about why it is your favorite as well. The IPL (Internet Public Library) is a great source for finding articles that depict nationalism and patriotism but sometimes it can be hard to navigate as many international newspapers are in their countries' native language. If you are unable to find examples through here I suggest visiting google news or yahoo news and searching for examples of each through there. Both websites have international newspapers for examples and all are in English. Trying to find that article for 5.03 still? Do not get stuck. Take a look at these. October 4:

5.04: Language of AnthemsWe have all heard the United States National Anthem: "Oh say can you see..." It is always good I am in a crowd when we sing because I definitely am not one who can hit those high notes. In this lesson we are going to peruse other countries anthems and find out what values they promote, whether they are more geared towards the people (nationalism) or the land, the country (patriotism). You will notice as you visit the site (http://www.national-anthems.net/index.html) that many are in their native language so if you have trouble look around for countries that speak English.
The work file provides an example but you will need to find 3 additional ones and analyze them. Sometimes students get stuck on the values. Here are some examples: Achievement Honesty Change and variety Independence Quality relationsihps Community Inner harmony Recognition (respect from others, status) Cooperation Responsibility and accountability Security Self-respect Ecological awareness Loyalty Stability Economic security Truth Excellence Nature Order (tranqulity, stability, conformity) Freedom I always have students that miss the 5 questions at the end of the work file. This is an extremely important section as it is where you organize your thoughts and explain how each anthem presented itself as either nationalistic or patriotic. Worth quite a lot so make sure you scroll all the way down before saving and submitting. Have fun looking at all the different anthems, maybe even listening to a few.

5.05: What is Terrorism?Last year in November Time magazine ran a cover with the Fort Hood shooter and the caption was "Terrorist?". http://tiny.cc/timeterrorist. I was really struck by this because it parallels this lesson. What is terrorism? It is not as easy to define as one would think. We all think we know but our definitions differ slightly. Some are broad and cover a lot more than I would like, others are so narrow it is hard to find a likely activity across the world. Is there a right answer? We are going to learn more about terrorism and some terms associated with it. You are going to be presented with three scenarios. After reading through them you are going to write your own definition of terrorism and then respond to two of the scenarios explaining if they are terrorist acts or not and why you believe so. You will post this to the discussion groups. (check the tutorial for posting on the discussion groups if you are not sure how to) As always you are going to respond to two of your fellow students definitions and responses and explain why you agree/disagree. Netiquette is important here as we all have differing opinions and it is a hard topic to discuss. There is an assessment to complete after your post so have your thoughts organized.

5.06: Two Views of TerrorismJust as we do not always agree about what terrorism is or is not many others in the world also disagree but there are some reasons, or 'roots', of terrorist acts that we can see universally. These are presented in the lesson. You will see several of them and they make sense but others you may be surprised about. We will go further and read two interviews. One is from Osama bin Laden and the other Imam Anwar Al-Alwaki. Both men are part of the Islamic religion but approach terrorism in different ways and see it occurring for different reasons. Take a close look at each man's definition for Jihad and see how that affects his viewpoint. This is just one example but highlights how even when we think they may agree because they are part of the same group there are big differences in their interpretation. As the lessons before states, "One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter." Complete the assessment and be sure to include specific information or examples from the interviews in your final essay.

5.07 Mapping Terrorist ActivityNow that we know why terrorist activity occurs we are going to learn about where it happens as well. There is a document in the lesson from the US Navy Web Site, "Chronology of Significant Terrorist Incidents". We will use this document to map all the terrorist activity listed in 2001. It was many years ago but the reasons behind the activities still are valid today. When I talk to students most of them think that the most significant terrorist activity occurred here in the US but after this lesson you will see that is not the case. In one country alone there was over 35 incidences and many others with far more than we had. For us, in the US, 911 was huge and changed our lives in a big way but imagine if a terrorist attack happened once a month or more even? Many countries do experience this type of activity. Once you print out your map and mark all the activity you will see there is a concentration in different parts of the world. With the work file you will organize the most concentrated areas and find out using the CIA World Factbook just why there is terrorism in these places. This work file will help tremendously when you complete the assessment for this lesson, especially the two essay questions. 5.08: In Our HandsWorld Peace! What a concept, right? Although it is not something just one of us can accomplish there are many things we can do to start the process and show peace within our own lives. This might help to stop the process of global violence and heighten security across the world. Take a look at the site within the lesson and pick an activity that you think you could easily accomplish. You will have to scroll down to the place where it lists "Pledge for Peace" to find the 6 ways listed. Once you decide which activity is for you write about it and explain why you chose it and how it could help improve global security. If we all work together we can make a difference.

5.09: Module AssessmentGovernment and terrorism! These two concepts are at the core of these lessons in module 5. Take the time to review different government types, the difference between nationalism and patriotism, even examples from each. We will review your definition of terrorism and talk about why and where this activity takes place.

5.10 First Segment ExamYou are ready! After you have completed all of your lessons you are ready to take the first segment exam. There are quite a few multiple choice and matching and three very important essay questions to answer. You have 2 hours to take the exam and remember not to back out or click off the exam or it will close. Within module 5 there is an exam review with vocabulary and key concepts to check.
