Module 3: World Population
3.01: Six Billion and CountingSix Billion and Counting gets us thinking about how population has changed throughout history. For many years there were less than 1 billion people on the planet but within the last couple hundred years we have blossomed to more than 6 billion. What kinds of things have changed to accommodate so many more people? Take a look!

3.02: Using DemographicsOnce we learn about demographics and how important they are to use when explaining a situation we continue to find out about basic needs of people. Food, water are both essentials to life. Read about Maslows hierarchy of needs. Fill out a work file looking at continents/regions and countries that are most and least under stress.

3.03: Listen Up!There are a lot of people on the planet! Do we have enough resources to continue growing as we have? What are some different ways people live across the world? Are there any changes we can make to allow our resources to last longer? These are all questions we are going to think about in this lesson. Have fun. This lesson includes your first experiment so gather your friends and family and show them what our carrying capacity is here in the United States.
|
3.04: What's Your Shoe Size?OK, so we have a big impact on the Earth's resources here in the United States. What about individually? Are you curious what your impact is? In this lesson we will learn a bit more about how the world is divided, what our individual footprint looks like and how we may be able to make a difference.
|
3.05 A Hungry WorldThere is a lot to be done in the world with regards to World Hunger but there are many who are making a difference. We can too though. For this lesson you are going to create your first presentation, a PSA or Public Service Announcement, explaining what is being done, what can be done and what you can do.
Here are some examples of great student work:

3.06 Food for ThoughtHave you ever thought about your diet and the impact the food you eat makes on our resources? A lot of our food choices are based upon cultural considerations but there are many factors including environmental, health-wise, economic concerns. Take a look at information for both sides of the meat vs. vegetarian diet. Make a choice and explain, post on the discussion groups and take the first opportunity to respond to a fellow student.
|
How do I post on the discussion groups?Several times throughout the course you will be asked to participate in a collaborative effort. You will be posting your well thought out opinion on the discussion groups and also responding to at least two other students. This is a wonderful way to have your voice heard and to also respond to others.
|
3.07 Take ActionThere is much more we can do in addition to reducing our own footprint. Let's take a look at several ways we can impact world population.
|
3.08 Module AssessmentWow! You have learned a lot about population-how large it is now and why it has grown so quickly. You understand how to use demographics and why it is important to understand our own footprint. A PSA was one way you showcased how we can make a difference with world hunger and you have posted on the discussion boards what your ideal diet is and based your post on objective information from the lesson. In addition to make a change at home you have explored ways to take action for others around the world.
Take the time to call, email, setup an appointment for your module assessment. We will chat about this module, review your work and go over any questions you might have about this module or the ones you are continuing onto. Thank you!
